Table tennis was very much to the fore on Saturday 7th March 2009 at the second session of the 11th National People’s Congress in the Great Hall of the People in Beijing.
Chinese Foreign Minister, Yang Jiechi, highlighted table tennis as one of his hobbies at the press conference held prior to the opening.

It was success for Singapore at the quarter-final stage of the Men’s
Singles event at the Indian Open in Indore on Saturday 14th March 2009.Four Singaporean players entered the arena at the start of proceedings; four players remained at the conclusion.

Top seeds Singapore’s Gao Ning and Yang Zi justified their exalted
position in the draw by securing gold in style in the Men’s Doubles
event at the Indian Open in Indore on Sunday 15th March 2009.At
the final hurdle they doused host nation aspirations by overcoming
Sharath Kamal Achanta and Subhajit Saha in a contest where gradually
they asserted themselves on proceedings. -

Certainly
that was the situation in the Men’s Singles event at the Indian Open in
Indore on Sunday 15th March 2009 where all four semi-finalists were
from Singapore.Both penultimate stage matches witnessed victory for the lower seeded player.

China’s 19 year old Ding Ning, the winner of the Women’s Singles
title at the Kuwait Open in February, is the player to make the most
progress in the higher reaches of the Women’s World Ranking issued by
the International Table Tennis Federation on Wednesday 4th March 2009. -

Few changes in the top 50 of the Men’s World Ranking list issued by
the International Table Tennis Federation on Wednesday 4th March 2009
but, several places lower down the order, those who performed
creditably on the ITTF Pro Tour in Kuwait and Qatar are rewarded. -

Wei Zhuzhu won the Men’s Singles title and Bai Shuang captured the counterpart Women’s Singles crown.
The
names are of course Chinese and players from that country winning
titles is nothing new; the difference is that they were not playing on
home soil, nor were they playing in one of the hotbeds of Asian or
European table tennis.
