Jörg Rosskopf and Steffen Fetzner will reunite for the Men’s Doubles event at the German Table Tennis Championships.
Although 39 and 40 years of age respectively, the World champions from Dortmund 1989 are not tired of competition.
"Speedy" and "Rossi" are still steeped in table tennis.
Rosskopf in the roles coach and player in Germany, Fetzner as coach in Qatar.
Still the Only Gold Medallists
In
spite of Timo Boll and company, Rosskopf and Fetzner are still the only
German players who have won a gold medal at an ITTF World Championship.
At the National Championships, being staged in Bielefeld from
6th to 8th March, the ambitions are not that great anymore. "We play
this tournament without any goals", Jörg Rosskopf guaranteed, adding
with a twinkle in his eye: "Solely: if we win, we’ll play at the
European Championships in Stuttgart."
The German Table Tennis Association (DTTB) will host the event from 13th to 20th September this year.
Coaching Career
Jörg
Rosskopf is still competing in the highest German league for the TTC
Indeland Jülich and plans to play at least one more year. Besides that,
he is assistant coach for the DTTB. Steffen Fetzner for his part has
been working as head coach of the ASPIRE Academy for Sports Excellence
in Doha.
"We both had the idea, that it would be nice to get
active 20 years after", record national team player Jörg Rosskopf said.
"Originally I wanted to play show matches with ¡Speedy’ but since he
works in Qatar, he’s not very often in Germany anymore."
