Singapore’s Feng Tianwei caused the major shock on the second day of
play, Sunday 7th September 2008, at the Volkswagen Women’s World Cup in
Kuala Lumpur, when she beat China’s Guo Yue in five games at the
quarter-final stage.
One fact is certain and one fact is more than the possible; that is the scenario for the Volkswagen Women’s World Cup.
The
tournament commences in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia on Saturday 6th
September and concludes with the final, three days later, on Monday 8th
September 2008.
The quarter-final matches in the Women’s Singles event was a
demonstration of Chinese table tennis art. Wang Nan, Guo Yue and Zhang
Yining all reached the semi-finals.
The closest match was
between Singapore’s Feng Tianwei and Zhang Yining. Zhang won 13-11,
12-14, 14-12, 12-10, 13-11; it was not a match for the faint-hearted.
Jörgen Persson is in the quarter-final. The 42 year old Swede saved
two match points against world number five Vladimir Samsonov. In the
quarter-final he will face Zoran Primorac from Croatia. The latter
eliminated Yang Zi from Singapore.
China’s Wang Nan is on the way to become the most successful Olympic
table tennis player ever. The 29 year old four time gold medallist
prevailed in the second semi-final match against compatriot and
reigning world singles champion from 2007 Guo Yue.
Wang Liqin is in an outstanding shape. The triple world champion won
4-0 against Croatia’s Tan Ruiwu in his quarter-final match today in the
Peking University venue. Wang can now prepare for a classic against
team-mate and compatriot Ma Lin.
The final of the Women’s Singles event at the Olympic Games in
Beijing was a Chinese affair. The 26 year old world number one overcame
in five games compatriot Wang Nan.
