Wang Liqin is in an outstanding shape. The triple world champion won
4-0 against Croatia’s Tan Ruiwu in his quarter-final match today in the
Peking University venue. Wang can now prepare for a classic against
team-mate and compatriot Ma Lin.
Ma Lin prevailed in his
quarter-final against Korea’s Oh Sang Eun. The two players already
faced each other in the team event. On the contrary to the match six
days ago, where Ma only won 3-2, the competition ended 4-0 in favour of
Ma. Oh missed his chances in the third (leading 9-4) and in the fourth
game.
Jörgen Persson Reaches the Semi-Final
Twenty
years after his first Olympic participation and eight years after his
fourth place in Sydney, Sweden’s Jörgen Persson again qualified for the
semi-final.
The 42 year old Swede won the "oldies" match
against Croatia’s Zoran Primorac. The latter missed his chances in the
fourth and fifth game to come back into the match. Persson is the
oldest man ever to reach an Olympic singles semi-final.
First Match: Wang Hao is the First Chinese in the Semi-Final
World
number one Wang Hao is still unbeaten at the Olympic Games. The top
seeded Chinese beat Ko Lai Chak of Hong Kong China in five games.
Wang
won 11-7, 8-11, 11-6, 11-7, 11-9. Ko already lost in the quarter-final
four years ago in Athens against the other Wang, Wang Liqin.
