Monday evening at around 11:20pm the Volkswagen 2009 Women’s World Cup in Guangzhou concluded. In an epic final China’s Liu Shiwen was crowned as the World Cup Champion at the first time of asking. Moreover, not only did we see a sensational match, those on site were also witness to one of the best ever presented Women’s World Cup. It truly was a fantastic match and one the crowd hugely enjoyed with Liu Shiwen winning in seven games.

    ITTF President Impressed
Even the ITTF President Mr. Adham Sharara was impressed.

“Although the final was an all-Chinese affair, I can honestly say that I did not notice that it was China versus China. In fact we witnessed an epic match between two young talented competitors, each with her own personality, fighting tooth and nail to win the title. Half the crowd cheered for Liu Shiwen and the other half supported the more experienced Guo Yue. I thank the Chinese TTA for allowing the players to flourish into their own personalities and give the crowd and the world a memorable match”, commented Adham Sharara after watching the match live on the ITTF’s itTV.

    Outstanding Presentation
For myself, having personally been involved with the ITTF for five years in China there was something else that also stood out. That is, that the organization and presentation of the event was truly outstanding.

Arguably the best we have ever seen in China for a non World Championship event. Perhaps the experience of the previous years World Championship helped but the reality is that Ms Zhang Hua (known to us as Linda) from the local organizing committee and Mr. Zhang Xiaopeng from the Chinese Table Tennis association worked in perfect cooperation with the ITTF and our sponsors.

It meant that the end result was truly a credit to all those involved.

    Innovations and a Fun Time
We saw for the very first the use of LED in the venue.

Volkswagen provided two large LED screens that added a great effect for the large venue and the ITTF and CTTA via the support of Double Happiness made a trial of LED surrounds on the TV court, which we will be able to develop to improve the look of our sport in the future.

As well all parties worked together to ensure that the entertainment was of the absolute highest quality. The ITTF providing a traditional Chinese band made up of very talented ladies who played cool modern music, the local organizers providing cheerleaders and acrobats and Volkswagen providing cool music and technical support, all coordinated by the director from Guangzhou and assisted by CTTA staff.

It was very obvious to Karl Jindrak, ITTF Competition Manager and myself that all those involved in the Volkswagen 2009 Women’s World Cup, and especially the large number of spectators (approximately 7000) during the final, all had a wonderful time. A 45 minute wait between the third place and final match felt like much less due to the entertainment provided between the two matches.

    Congratulations
So congratulations to Guangzhou and their organizing committee and congratulations to the Chinese Table Tennis association for hosting such a wonderful event, the ITTF is looking forward to more such wonderful events and supporting our National Associations to help improve them even more.
