Prior to the H.I.S. 2009 World Table Tennis Championships, the 11th ITTF Sports Science Congress was held in the Yokohama Sports Medical Center. The congress was initiated by former ITTF President Ichiro Ogimura and has been staged since 1989.
Third Time in Japan
The 11th ITTF Sports Science Congress was held from 25th to 27th April 2009 preceding the 50th World Table Tennis Championships. It was the third time that the ITTF Sports Science Congress took place in Japan. The first one was in Fukaya, Saitama Prefecture in 1991; the second one was held in Osaka in 2001.
The congress was commenced by Mr. Ichiro Ogimura when he was the ITTF President. For further information please click on history of the ITTF Sports Science Congress.
Facts about the Congress
At the opening session there were four speakers: Mr. Koji Kimura, Executive Vice-President of the ITTF; Dr. Jean-François Kahn, Chairman of the ITTF Sports Science Committee; Professor Yutaka Tsuji, the Congress Chair; and Ms. Michiyo Kimura, professor of Takasaki University of Health and Welfare, who delivered a keynote lecture with the title “Effective nutrition support for table tennis players”.
The first oral session started from the afternoon. The first poster session was held in the later afternoon. The number of papers submitted to the congress was 76; 16 were for oral and 60 for poster presentations. The total number of participants including invited persons and student staff was about 100.
Banquet in the Prince Hotel
In the evening of the second day, the congress banquet took place in Shin Yokohama Prince Hotel. ITTF President Mr. Adham Sharara mentioned his expectation from the research of table tennis science. He expressed his request toward the scientists not only to explain and analyze known facts but also to propose new ideas for the future how to improve table tennis.
Finally it should be pointed out that financial support by Ezaki Glico Co. Ltd., San-Ei Corp., Tamasu Co. Ltd., Yasaka Co. Ltd., Yamato Takkyu Co. Ltd. and ShinNihonKigyo Co. Ltd. were of great help for the congress.
