    Tennis ace Serena Williams of the United States picked up a table tennis racket on the eve of the Sony Ericsson Championships in Doha. The current WTA no. 2 was taught table tennis by former Commonwealth champion Matthew Syed.

    After Roger Federer, Andy Roddick, and Anna Kournikova have already been shot playing table tennis, another star from tennis could not help trying it. Serena Williams, the reigning Australian Open and Wimbledon champion, proved to have a good feeling also for the celluloid ball.

    “The thing about it: she picked it up very fast”, Serena’s instructor Matthew Syed praised the 23 times Grand Slam winner and double Olympic champion. “She was very competitive and she was finding the right moves.” Syed went even one step further telling her at the end of the session: “You have Forrest Gump genes.”

    Matthew Syed wrote for the Times Online about his meeting with the tennis ace. The younger of the two Williams sisters spoke about her religion, her experiences with a racist home crowd, about gun fire in the neighbourhood she grew up, how her sister was killed in a drive-by shooting, about the slavery of her ancestors, her curvy body, her ex boyfriend and what a it is about being a champion.
