    ITTF Pro Tour: Qatar Open

    Doha, 17th February 2010

Talented Teenager Terrors Torment Tortured Trio
Russia’s Yana NOSKOVA plus the German duo of Sabine WINTER and Petrissa SOLJA, all teenagers, hit form in the qualification stage of the Women’s Singles event at the Qatar Open in Doha on Wednesday 17th February 2010 to cause a hat-trick of upsets.

It was 17 year old Sabine WINTER who set the ball rolling; currently standing at no.261 on the ITTF Women’s World Rankings, she beat Veronika PAVLOVICH of Belarus, world ranked no.67 and the highest rated player in the first stage of the Women’s Singles competition.

Less than five minutes later, 15 year old Petrissa SOLJA, world ranked no.233, defeated Korea’s MOON Hyun Jung, world ranked no.75 and the fourth highest globally listed female player participating on the first day in Doha.

Two upsets and then within an hour there was a third.

Yana NOSKOVA, 16 years old and standing at no.240 on the female world list, beat the staunch French defensive artiste, LI Xue, ranked no.70 and the second highest world ranked player in action in the opening exchanges of the Women’s Singles event.

The one highly rated player to avoid the carnage was Poland’s XU Jie, the third rated player in action. She beat both Russia’s Anastasia KITSOVA and Alena DUBKOVA of Belarus to secure a place in the main draw.

The consolation for the three defeated stars is that the top two players in each group progress to the second stage; hopes of progress remain very much alive.

Problems for the leading ladies and there were problems for one leading man on the first day.

Portugal’s Tiago APOLONIA, the third highest world ranked man on duty on day one, was beaten by the Czech Republic’s Tomas TREGLER.

Currently Tiago APOLONIA is listed at no.57 on the ITTF Men’s World Rankings as opposed to Tomas TREGLER who is at no.299.

A reverse for Tiago Apolonia but no such heartaches for Sweden’s Pär GERELL and Belgium’s Jean-Michel SAIVE, the highest world ranked men on duty on day one; nor was there great trouble for Poland’s WANG Zeng Yi.

The fourth highest in action, he negotiated matters without due alarm.
