continent. Quentin Robinot and Simon Gauzy won the Junior and Cadet
Boys’ Singles finals respectively.
While Gauzy was top seeded,
defending champion and in his last year as a Cadet player, Robinot’s
title is a sensation. Only 16 years old, the European Junior no. 11
surprised not only himself but also the National Technical Director.
Celebration time for Ukraine and Germany on the last day of
competition, Sunday 19th July 2009, at the European Youth Championships
in Prague. Margaryta Pesotska and Petrissa Solja defended their titles
successfully in the Junior and Cadet Girls’ Singles events
respectively.
Both won in an impressive manner after negotiating difficult hurdles earlier.
The French boys defended their title in the Junior Team event at the European Youth Championships in Prague.
In spite or because of a risky line-up made by coach Jacques Mommessin, the French won 3-1.
At the European Youth Championships in Prague, boys from Western
Europe and girls from Eastern European countries will face each other
in the final.
The Swedes surprised with Kristian Karlsson and Matthias Oversjö beating Germany’s number one Patrick Franziska.
The first prize at the Morocco Open in Rabat on Friday 10th July
2009 may not have rocketed Vladimir Samsonov and Ai Fukuhara, the
respective winners of the Men’s and Women’s Singles titles, to the top
of the Standings but it has had one very positive effect.
The Germans had to fight hard against the Czech Republic in order to
qualify for the semi-final. The boys of Georg Imhof were 1-2 down after
three matches but once again they could rely on their team leader
Patrick Franziska.
China’s Tang Liying and Chinese Taipei’s Chiang Hung-Chieh succeded
in the finals of the Women’s and Men’s Singles events respectively on
the last day of competition, Friday 10th July, at the Universiade in
Belgrade. They both overcame Japanese opponents.
The Czech capital city of Prague is hosting the 52nd European Youth
Championships from 10th to 19th July 2009. A total of 577 players from
46 associations will compete in seven events for Juniors (born in 1991
or later) and seven events for Cadets (1994 or younger).
Egypt’s Dina Meshref and Korea’s Shim Se Rom were the players to
upset the seeding in the opening round of the Women’s Singles event at
the Morocco Open Hassan II in Rabat on Wednesday 8th July 2009.
Teenager
Meshref overcame seventh seeded Russian, Irina Ermakova; whilst Shim Se
Rom defeated Lorine Brunet of France, the no.8 seed.
Egypt’s Mohamed El-Beiali and Russia’s Alexander Shibaev were the
players to cause the upsets in the first round of the Men’s Singles
event at the Morocco Open in Rabat on Wednesday 8th July 2009.
Both
negotiated the qualification stage in style and both ended the
adventures of players who had received direct entries to the main draw.
