    Ruwen Filus delighted the home fans at the German Open in Bremen on
    Saturday 21st March 2009 by winning the Under 21 Men’s Singles event
    overcoming the Czech Republic’s Tomas Tregler at the final hurdle.

    Combining
    solid defence with the occasional attack, Filus overcame Tregler in
    four straight games to clinch gold. He won 11-6, 11-6, 11-9, 11-9.

    Success for Germany whilst in the counterpart Under 21 Women’s Singles competition it was victory for China.
    Mu Zi secured the top prize overcoming national team colleague, Wang
    Xuan, at the final hurdle; Mu Zi won 6-11, 11-8, 12-10, 8-11, 11-8,
    11-9.

    Victory Path
    Seeded
    no.9 in the Under 21 Men’s Singles event, Ruwen Filus recorded an
    opening round victory over Russia’s Alexander Shibaev before ousting
    top seed, Chinese Taipei’s Chiang Hung-Chieh, in round two.

    A
    confidence boosting win, he defeated Hungary’s Daniel Kosiba in the
    quarter-finals before ending the hopes of Japan’s Kenji Matsudaira, the
    no.3 seed, in the semi-finals.

    Not Seeded
    Meanwhile,
    Tomas Tregler, not seeded, overcame Turkey’s Jiang Pengfei, France’s
    Thomas Le Breton, Denmark’s Kasper Sternberg and Singapore’s fourth
    seeded Ma Liang on his route to the final.

    Gold for the no.9
    seed in the Under 21 Men’s Singles competition, whilst in the Under 21
    Women’s Singles event it was the no.5 seed who prevailed.

    Route to Final
    The
    rising Chinese star, Mu Zi, accounted for Germany’s Rosalia Stähr in
    the opening round before recording a quarter-final win over Romanian
    top seed, Elizabeta Samara. A place in the semi-finals booked, she
    overcame the defensive skills of compatriot and no.6 seed Wu Yang to
    reserve her place in the final.

    Wu Yang had caused one of the
    surprises of the event by beating Li Xiaodan in the quarter-finals, the
    latter being a semi-finalist in the Women’s Singles event.

    Surprise
    A
    surprise and according to ranking the appearance of Wang Xuan in the
    final was somewhat of a surprise; not seeded she overcame Turkey’s Hu
    Melek and He Sirin before recording a semi-final success over
    Singapore’s Yu Meng Yu.

    Thus a place in the final was reserved
    but it was not to be gold; as in the Under 21 Men’s Singles event, the
    seeded player rule.

    Mu Zi was the champion.
