The German men are performing well at the ITTF Pro Tour Danish Open
in Frederikshavn. All Olympic Team silver medallists reached the
quarter-finals in the Men’s Singles event.
After Ovtcharov and
Boll, Christian Süss caused the biggest surprise of the tournament so
far. The 23 year old German eliminated China’s world no. 9 Hao Shuai,
winner of the Slovenian Open a week ago.
Prause Nervous, Süss Tranquil
The
German won by four games to two because he was better in the close
games. "I had a lot of self-confidence", Süss said regarding the reason
why he won the close games. "I don’t know why, because I’ve not had
good results recently but I’ve practised hard and it’s nice that this
gets remunerated."
When Süss saved two game points in the sixth
game his coach Richard Prause was unable to control his legs anymore.
Only Süss remained calm and used his second match point to full effect.
"I know that he gets nervous and vulnerable", the German said about his
opponent.
Boll Wins the German Duel - Ovtcharov in Top Form
Patrick
Baum was not able to upset his compatriot and world no. 4 Timo Boll.
The latter won 11-6, 11-3, 11-1, 11-7. China’s Zhang Jike will have to
show exceptional form to beat Boll.
The third German player in
the quarter-finals is Dimitrij Ovtcharov; he beat Frenchman Adrien
Mattenet by four games to nil. Mattenet played a good match, but
whatever he tried, Ovtcharov anticipated.
