Botswana, a landlocked country in Southern Africa, formerly the British Protectorate of Bechuanaland and a member of the Commonwealth since gaining independence in September 1966, was the home for an ITTF Training Camp from Sunday 26th July to Monday 3rd August 2009.

Organised under the auspices of the ITTF Development Programme, the expert on duty was Croatia’s Branka Batinic whose goal was primarily to prepare the national team for the forthcoming Africa Zone 6 Tournament to be staged in neighbouring South Africa.

Five boys and five girls attended the Training Camp which was staged in the country’s capital city, Gaborone.
    First Time
“It was the first time that such a training camp for the national team had been staged in Botswana”, said Branka Batinic. “We had six days hard practice; the first part was physical preparation with footwork and power exercises, then more and more we changed to the fine skills like services, returning services, placing returns more precisely and playing against different styles such as defence, long pimples and short pimples.”

    Mental Aspect
The programme was very thorough with a wide range of aspects covered.

“We talked about motivation and mental preparation”, continued Branka Batinic. “The training camp we finished with an international tournament last weekend which helped in the final analysis of each player.”

    Coach Education
Not only did the players receive help, also the coaches received the benefit of Branka Batinic’s considerable knowledge.

“I used the week to help two coaches from Botswana, Sai Maribe and Thebe Selema, who are coaching the national team”, added Branka Batinic. “I wanted to give them the opportunity to learn skills to use after my departure.”

    Good Organisation
A successful programme was completed thanks to the splendid organisation effected by the Botswana Table tennis Association and in particular the Association’s President, Nathaniel Rakhudu.

It was a most worthwhile experience for all concerned.
