The leading names in the opening round of the Women’s Singles event
at the Stag Belarus Open in Minsk, all enjoyed success early in the
evening of Friday 29th May 2009.
Top seed Austria’s Liu Jia
overcame the host nation’s Yana Drykina in straight games (11-3, 11-4,
11-5, 11-5) whilst the latter’s compatriot, Viktoria Pavlovich, seeded
no.2, enjoyed an equally trouble free path. She accounted for Germany’s
Rosalia Stähr in equally impressive style; the Belarus defender won
11-4, 11-6, 11-6, 11-7.

Similarly
Korea’s Dang Ye Seo, seeded no.3 and Germany’s Zhenqi Barthel, seeded
no.4, progressed in similar vein to the top two seeds.
Dang Ye
Seo defeated Tatiana Churabaeva of Belarus (11-1, 11-2, 11-5, 11-2),
whilst Zhenqi Barthel ended the hopes of Russia’s Maria Bykova in
efficient fashion. She won 14-12, 11-9, 11-3, 11-7.
Likewise
In
likewise manner, there were victories for the second seeds twin sister,
Veronika Pavlovich, Germany’s Kristin Silbereisen and Li Xue of France.
Veronika
Pavlovich, seeded no.5, accounted for Poland’s Katarzyna Grzybowska in
straight games (11-8, 11-5, 11-2, 11-9) whilst Kristin Silbereisen,
seeded no.8, accounted for Russia’s Irene Ermakova in equally
impressive fashion.
She won 11-6, 11-9, 11-4, 11-9.
Absentee
The
only one of the top eight seeds not to gain a place in the second round
was the absent Yan Xiaoshan of Poland, the no.6 seed; the beneficiary
from the absence was her colleague, Kinga Stefanska. She defeated
Natallia Zhyshkevich of Belarus in five games.
Stefanska won 10-12, 11-5, 11-4, 11-4, 11-5.
Surprise
Success
as expected but there was one surprise result; Russia’s margarita
fetukhina defeated Linda Creemers of the Netherlands, the no.16 seed,
in five games.
The Russian won 11-4, 12-10, 7-11, 11-5, 12-10.
