“The finger of my right hand was badly hurt due to overexert in recent practice, and according to diagnosis, it is fracture! Regrettably, I have to quit the world championships in Yokohama” announced Ai Fukuhara, painfully and almost in tears. That was the scenario on a press conference on 1st April, held by the Japan Table Tennis Association (JTTA), to release their new uniform for the up-coming big event.

    Just a Joke
If you pay enough attention to the date, you will soon realize that the words at the beginning of this paragraph are merely a false alarm by Ai Fukuhara– a joke on April Fool’s Day!

Obviously the JTTA did not take this festival into account, and when the girl in the limelight made such a shocking announcement to her surrounding media, you can imagine the uproar from both the press and the officials.

With an air of complacency, Fukuhara clarified this drama and got back on topic of the day: “I feel very comfortable in this new uniform, and you can see more clearly how it looks on me. Actually it’s much lighter and loose than before, and I feel at ease especially when I sway fast.”

    Chasing an Individual Medal
When talking about her goals at this year’s World Championships, Fukuhara, who hasn’t been at her best since the beginning of 2009, aimed at a medal. She said: “This year is the 150th anniversary for the city of Yokohama, and we hope the home advantage could bring us good luck. Personally I will treat every match seriously and my target is winning a medal.”

So far Ai Fukuhara has won three bronze medals at World Championships, all with the Japanese team. Her best results in the individual events are the qualification for the quarter-finals 2003 in Paris in the Women’s Singles as well as the quarter-finals in the Women’s Doubles at the 2005 World Championships in Shanghai.
