I was scanning the sports section of a newspaper the other day and chanced upon the results of the European table tennis championship.
It seemed that the major winning teams have a number of players with Chinese-sounding names. It is certainly not the case of Europeans adopting Chinese names now that the economic power is shifting eastwards, compared to Asians using Caucasian names for social reasons.

Chile’s 18 year old Felipe Olivares and Paraguay’s 17 year old Sandy Gavilan won the respective Boys’ and Girls’ Singles titles at the South American Junior Championships which concluded in the Peruvian city of Chiclayo on Tuesday 4th May 2010.

At the Volkswagen World Junior Championships in December 2009, as part of the Colombianitos programme, members of the International Table Tennis Federation visited areas of Cartagena de Indias where table tennis has a vital humanitarian role to play.

On April 26th, USATT received a copy of the arbitrator’s report from retained outside counsel stemming from the American Arbitration Association (AAA) hearing that resulted from a complaint filed by athletes Raghu Nadmichettu and Mark Hazinski. These two athletes were suspended for one year based upon a complaint filed by the USATT Board of Directors and a hearing decision made by the USATT Ethics Committee for the actions they took at the U.S. Nationals in December of 2009. The athletes desired to participate in the 2010 Nationals Team Trials held at Texas Wesleyan University on March 3 – 4 (a U.S. Olympic Committee protected event). As a result, an expedited AAA hearing was held on March 3, 2010. The result of that hearing was that Raghu Nadmichettu and Mark Hazinski were allowed to enter that March 3 - 4 event and their suspensions were vacated.

Germany’s 16 year old Florian Wagner and 15 year old Katsiaryna Baravok from Belarus, booked the final places in the table tennis events to be staged at the Youth Olympic Games in August in Singapore, by emerging successful in the respective Boys’ and Girls’ Singles events at the Pan American Qualification tournament in the Venezuelan city of Valencia on Sunday 25th April 2010.

Brazil’s 14 year old Caroline Kumahara emerged as the star performer at the Venezuela Junior and Cadet Open in Valencia on Friday 23rd April 2010, winning both the Cadet Girls’ Singles and Junior Girls’ Singles titles.

Volkswagen Cup - Guangzhou

Top Seeds Secure Titles in Guangzhou China’s 21 year old MA Long and 18 year old LIU Shiwen won the respective Men’s and Women’s Singles titles at the Volkswagen Cup – Guangzhou on Tuesday 30th March 2010 and, in so doing, each left the southern Chinese city US$50,000 richer and the proud owners of Volkswagen Tiguan Saloon cars.

Jan-Ove Waldner, arguably the world’s best player ever, gave a very candid interview about his career and about the sport of table tennis in current times. The interview was conducted in Swedish by a table tennis forum member known as Anger manager, and was translated into English by OOAK forum Moderator Brabhamista.

Predictable and Unpredictable in Berlin China’s MA Long, the world no1, won the Men’s Singles title at the German Open in Berlin on Sunday 21st March 2010, as his seeding predicted, but in the counterpart Women’s Singles event it was quite the reverse scenario.

Winners of Men’s Doubles titles on the ITTF Pro Tour but never as a pair, Chen Qi and Ma Long secured gold in Berlin to bring proceeding at the 2010 German Open to a close in the early evening of Sunday 21st March 2010.
