semi-finals at the Japan Open in Wakayama on Sunday 14th June 2009 by
beating Austria’s Werner Schlager, the no.4 seed, in five games.
In
the battle between the 2003 World champion and 2005 World Junior
champion, the latter prevailed 12-10, 12-14, 11-9, 11-8, 11-8.
Korea’s Park Mi Young and Japan’s Sayaka Hirano, the respective top
two seeds in the Women’s Singles event at the Japan Open in Wakayama,
booked their places in the final, following success at the penultimate
stage on the morning of Sunday 14th June 2009.
Both progressed in impressive style.
Germany’s Patrick Baum, Japan’s Kenta Matsudaira and Japan’s Seiya
Kishikawa; the highest three world ranked players in action on the
opening day of proceedings, Thursday 11th June 2009, at the Japan Open
in Wakayama, all finished in first place in their respective groups and
thus booked places in the main draw.
Certainly on Thursday 11th June 2009, it was the ‘Match of the Day’
and there could but just cause for dubbing the contest the ‘Match of
the Year’.
Belgium’s 39 year old Jean-Michel Saive, the living legend of
Belgian table tennis, has been elected to serve for a four year term of
office on the Belgian Olympic Committee Interfederal (COIB).
At
the General Assembly held on Friday 6th June 2009, Saive received 67
votes and will serve as one of the seven Francophone Directors on a
board which comprises 15 directors.
China’s Liu Shiwen upset the seeding to reach the final of the
Women’s Singles event at the Harmony China Open in Suzhou on Sunday 7th
June 2009 by overcoming second seed, compatriot Li Xiaoxia, in their
penultimate round contest.
Hard fought seven games duels were the order of the day at the
semi-final stage of the Men’s Singles event at the Harmony China Open
in Suzhou on Sunday 7th June 2009 with China’s Ma Long and Wang Liqin
emerging successful.
No Cure from World Champion as Austrian Receives Taste of Own
Medicine. At the H.I.S World Championships, on the last day of April,
Austria’s 20 year Stefen Fegerl caused arguably the biggest upset in

magnificent and a bookmaker will only give odds on that female players
from China will make a clean sweep of medals at the London 2012 Olympic
Games.
It could hardly have been closer; that was the situation in the
Men’s Singles qualification group at the Harmony China Open in Suzhou
that involved Chinese Taipei’s Chen Chien-An, Japan’s Koki Niwa and
Korea’s Kim Gang Woong.
